Who Are The Austrian Special Forces?
Jagdkommando is the special forces unit that is exclusive to Austria. It has been active in Austria since 1962 and is set up to combat Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Insurgency. The soldiers who are part of Jagkommando, which means "Hunting Command" are specially trained professionals who endure tremendous physical and psychological training in order to make this special type of team.
History Of The Austrian Special Forces
The history of the Austrian Commando Units originally started in 1961 at which time Austrian officers trained at the US Army Ranger School in an effort to set up this special Austrian branch of special forces. Since then, the Jagdkommando has turned into one of the most respected special forces teams in the world. They specialize in classified missions and incorporated their own military tactics and knowledge into the forces. The Jagdkommando is located in Wiener Neustadt.
How To Become A Member Of The Jagdkommando
Those who join this Austrian special forces team are members of the Austrian Army. Both officers and enlisted men can try out to train for this special branch of the Austrian armed forces. Only 6 percent of those who actually try out for the Jagdkommando actually make it into this special forces unit.
In order to train to be a member of this elite squad, soldiers need not have no criminal record, have completed a preparation course if they are enlisted soldiers and have exceptional mental as well as physical fitness.
Jagdkommando Training
Training for the Jagdkommando is rigorous at best. It includes alpine training as well as parachuting, swimming, combat training, medical training, survival skills, hand to hand combat and close quarter combat and blast training. There are only a small number of soldiers who pass the course and are awarded the insignia that sets them apart as a member of this elite special forces team.
What Are They Best At?
The basic tasks of this Austrian special forces unit include gathering of high level military intelligence, higher than ordinary intelligence that is acquired by special forces. Personal security, the rescuing of hostages, evacuation and counter terrorism are all part of the tasks that this special forces team undertakes.
As is the case with other special forces teams, this Austrian special forces team is sent in on dangerous assignments to assist soldiers in times of battle. They are considered to be the fittest of all of the armed forces in Austria and enter the program from the Austrian Army experts in the field of combat, anti-terrorism and intelligence gathering.
Weapons Of The Jagdkommando
The weapons used by the Jagdkommando forces include the FN Herstal P90, the Glock 17, 18, 21 and 26, A Barrett M95, a Steyr AUG and the Steyr SSG.
Known Missions
Although their missions are classified, this special forces team will also operate in places where regular Austrian troops are also located, examples being the Balkins as well as Afghanistan. Recently, the Jagdkommando troops are in the midst of protecting Dufur refugee camps.
Are They Professional Soldiers?
The Jagdkommando forces consist of professional soldiers and are not volunteers. Most of those who make this elite force continue a career in the Austrian armed forces

The past is no longer what you think. That's a subjective statement, I know, but I'm not talking about a first grader last memory of Christmas is perceptually in relation to the memory of an octogenarian of the Eisenhower years.
No, what I mean is this: If you measure the passage of time with human life as far tape, current inhabitants of Earth are not so far from George Washington, William Shakespeare, Constantine Pope or Jesus.
I have developed this concept after playing Six Degrees of Separation with some friends one night. Six Degrees is a fun social exercise minimum based on the assumption that each person planet is connected to everyone else for no more than six people.
Socially connected, ie the way in which it is connected with neighbors, coworkers, friends and family. These are the people you know, for better or for worse. So if your coworker is old pal University assistant director husband on the set of The Office, which is four degrees away from Emmy winner, actor Steve Carell.
Pretty cool, huh? I started with a bang that night, myself connecting two degrees to the Beatles. A friend's father was a well-known promoter who had worked with everyone from Elvis to Bob Dylan to Bob Hope, but it was his association with the Beatles that really impressed me. framed photos in his office appears Dad smiling proudly next to one or another celebrity, like a fisherman posing with his latest capture.
So I met a guy who knew the Beatles and they are my two degrees, simple as pie.
But here in the great vast suburbs of metropolitan New York, it's hard you do not log two or three degrees for the famous, infamous or influential. In fact, I would say that no matter where you reside in the United States, you'd have to live a fairly insular existence of not being connected to at least one well-known person.
Now, I know that this premise is not specific Six Degrees of famous. Is supposed to apply to all inhabitants of the planet. But who cares about my connection with an Australian rancher or Iraqi insurgent? What I know is how I am connected with influential people, people who have left their mark on history.
And so I made my greatest achievement of the evening taking form in a spontaneous flash of intuition. It appeared only a Coors Light and was lifting the can to my lips when I realized that our connections are not limited to the living. I have followed this thread for about forty seconds, until ... Eureka!
I laughed out loud at the connection without effort he had done to one of the most significant figures in American history: I am separated by six degrees and score five and four of forty years of our sixteenth president nation, Abraham Lincoln.
Hard to believe, but true as toast. Only five people between me and Honest Abe. All but one no longer lives and Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth president, is the fourth level of this chain. In addition, the key person in the equation was a member of the Kennedy administration, as JFK is only three degrees away.
Teddy Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, however, Lincoln thought that the connection was by far the freshest, because how do you can connect with a man who died in 1865?
Here's how it works:
A friend of mine is the son of a famous Washington lawyer. As a young man, my friend's father was well aware of a granddaughter of Theodore Roosevelt. This granddaughter fondly remembered his grandfather stuffed which was the first Secretary of State Mr. John Hay, John Hay and the same who, as a much younger man, had served as personal secretary to Abraham Lincoln.
So I knew that my companion, my friend knew his dad, his dad knew TR granddaughter, the granddaughter knew TR, TR knew Hay, and Hay knew Lincoln.
Strangely enough, I thought, and my friends agreed.
On the way home that night, I started wondering who shared the planet with that in certain moments in history. If Leonardo da Vinci and Christopher Columbus life together? What Mozart and George Washington? From this line of thought emerged "Did you know?" game that my kids get a kick out of it. The facts defy logic, until you do the math, but once it does, the story seems a little less distant.
My grandmother, for example, was born in 1912. Anyone forty-seven years of age who had breathed the same air as the living Abraham Lincoln. And anyone over the age of eighty-six was born in 1912 when Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, our presidents in their second and third, still walked the earth. An old baby cuddling my grandmother could have been pampered like a baby, an elderly John Adams. So if mimes account Six Degrees as a "connection" and I hugged my grandmother when I was a baby, then I could conceivably be only three degrees removed from two signers of the Declaration of Independence.
In this scenario, recent Lincoln seems positive. When I in this life in 1961, there were still some people alive who was born during the life of Lincoln. In fact, the last of the Lincoln-era humans do not go beyond mortal existence until the mid-1970s, after having gone through the years from horse-drawn carriages on the pavement in the light of gas and disco radio car on the road to Los Angeles.
I'll bet ol 'Abe would agree, if he were with us today at the age two-hundred, that the past is not really as long as you think, no matter how many score years you go back.
